Hurricane Irene Photos - my neighborhood in Phoenicia, NY

Here are some photos I took today of my neighborhood.  It doesn't look quite the same as it did a few days ago....

My muddy backyard

My backyard from a few weeks ago (ironically showing Laura, whom we are now staying with since being displaced)

before the mud...

The Esopus around the corner from me - it looks different than it did last week...

.... this is how it looked on November 28, 2010

My next door neighbor's foundation is mostly gone...

...you can see the basement from the backyard.

My other next door neighbor's front yard.

My neighbors across the street got it pretty bad too....
...their pool looks much worse than mine.
This is gonna take awhile to clean up - thankfully nothing that can't be fixed, but the Catskills have been permanently changed - physically and psychologically.

Hurricane Irene videos - Phoenicia and surrounding Catskills towns

Some Youtube videos I found of hurricane Irene's devastation to Phoenicia and nearby:

  • This one has bad music, but a good range of footage showing before, during and after of areas near my house and in nearby Mt. Tremper and Boiceville:

  • Here's a series from within the town of Phoenicia during the actual storm - these are all shot within few hundred feet from my house:

  • And some aftermath videos:
  • As bad as Phoenicia and the nearby towns were hit, there were some worse hit areas not too far away, such as the YMCA camp in Frost Valley, which is about 20-30 minutes away from me (sorry about the bad music, and only still images, but you get the picture:

  • And of course there was Margaretville, Tannersville and Wyndham - all within 30-45 minutes of my home - they really got hammered:

NYFA MARK 10 Troy Group show

It's such an honor to be included with so many great artists at the NYFA MARK 10 Troy Group show at the House of Creative Soul in Saratoga Springs, NY.  I really should do a blog entry on each and every artist in the show, as I truly am impressed and inspired by all of their work.  When I walked into the gallery for the first time yesterday, I was blown away by Deborah Zlotsky's paintings, as well as the paintings by Leslie Parke and Yolanda Sharpe, and the photo-based work of Jeri Eisenberg.  And that's just the first few that come to mind.  Incredible work by everyone, really!  The show runs from October 6th to November 28th, with the opening reception on Thursday, October 14th.

ArtPrize Installation Complete!

My BFFs Brian and John finished installing my ArtPrize video projection for "Wastewater Runoff Pipe" at the B.O.B. in Grand Rapids, Michigan yesterday.  They did a fabulous job and overcame the many hurdles that you often encounter when installing in a non-art space - I'm extremely grateful to them and impressed by the incredibly professional looking results.  Take a peek at the install:
Hanging the projection screen in the window
The projection floating in the window
John adjusting the projector

The projection is still visible even during the day with all that light from the window
The exhibition is up until October 10th, and if you register with ArtPrize you can vote for my piece and I can win big bucks - top prize is $100,000 - serious cash! Check out the details on on how to register to vote here and go to my ArtPrize profile page to get the voting codes.  You can go the venue page for the B.O.B. to find out the details about the venue and for directions to go see my work in person.

Links to my friends from the NYFA MARK 10 program

  • NYFA Mark 10 was a professional career development program I participated in sponsored by the New York Foundation for the Arts. I met many wonderful and talented artists through the program, and below are links to some of their sites, in no particular order:

    • Kathleen Sherin is a Buffalo, NY based artist who creates abstract collages, incorporating various printmaking and painting techniques. Her "Border" series explores the complexity of microscopic biological forms and texture through layering and transparency.

    • Oreen Cohen and I share a fascination with combining industrial and natural decay, most evident in her found object sculptural installations.

    • Dorothy Fitzgerald is an accomplished painter living in Buffalo, NY, who creates bold mixed media collage paintings that explore emotional and philosophical issues relating to spirituality vs. sexuality. She also has a blog where she opens up her studio and process.

    • Nancy Muller paints landscapes and portraits that are both sensitive and expressionistic. Her style is loose, but captures the soft qualities of light and expression.

    • Patti Robinson is an avid and eclectic collector and creator. Her mixed media collages and sculptures combine anything and everything to create fantastic new visions.

    • Jean Luongo paints people and things with both humor and a sense of purpose.

    • Rebecca Adams navigates between beauty and expressive decay with her mixed media paintings.
